Specialty Dog Leashes Improve Safety and Make Training Easy

As dog ownership continues to increase, our perception of the relationships to our dogs has also evolved to where many consider their furry friend an important family member.

Manufacturers of dog supplies have accordingly increased the variety of their offerings giving dog owners safer and easier options to easily train and live with their dogs.
The same holds true with dog walking supplies, including leashes.

The variety of options for specialty leashes has grown for both training and safety uses.
For dogs that pull their leashes, bungee leashes can be added as a helpful tool for training. The idea is that the tension built in a bungee leash increases as the leash stretches and the resistance the dog experiences teaches them not to pull without adding as much strain for dog or owner. The dog's weight determines the size of the leash.

There are also a wide variety of hands free dog leashes. Hands free leashes obviously allow the dog owner the ability to simultaneously leash and walk the dog while pushing a stroller, using a cell phone, running, etc. Bike leashes are also in this category, although it would seem leashing a dog to a moving bicycle for any length of time warrants additional consideration and possible concern. One of our favorite leashes in the hands-free genre is the Vario 6 which is extremely versatile and can be used as a 5 foot-, 3 foot-, double and hands free leash as well as a short and long lead.

Few categories in specialty leashes offer as much benefit as those which help improve dog safety for nighttime walks. Dog ownership will require some walking adventures outside in the dark which adds an element of increased danger for both you and your dog.

This is primarily due to decreased visibility. Not only is it difficult to avoid objects where you are walking, but it is hard for cars to see you and often impossible to see your dog since it is also below the natural sight line. Nighttime hazards can spell disaster for you and your friend.
Decreasing danger while you are walking your dog in the dark requires increasing visibility for yourself and to others.

There are a variety of options for improving safety for walking in the dark, mostly pertaining to increased visibility of the leash and collar. There are lighted leashes with LED lighting that stays lit or blinks for increased awareness. There are reflective leashes and collars that work just like reflective clothing strips. There are even leashes with small flashlights attached which shine on the dog. In fact, many retractable leashes offer a flashlight option.

If you don't want to add another dog leash to your rotation, there are also lighted and reflective strips that you can clip onto your dog's leash and collar.

Most dog owners will find it convenient to own more than one leash beyond the traditional 4- to 6-foot nylon or leather walking leash. With an increasing variety of items offered, finding the right specialty leashes isn't really difficult, it just takes a little planning. And the proliferation of internet-based dog supply sites makes finding what you need even easier.
